Navigating the realities of documentary filmmaking and video production takes more than just turning on a camera—it requires technical problem-solving, deep collaboration, and the ability to tell an authentic story. Seeing these exact skills cultivated in local youth is what makes Film Prize Junior New Mexico such a remarkable initiative.

The Big Picture: What is Film Prize Jr. New Mexico?

Launched in 2021, Film Prize Junior New Mexico is a statewide short film program that empowers middle and high school students to step into the roles of writers, directors, and editors. The mission is simple but profound: helping students tell unique stories of self, of place, and of culture.

Since its inception, the program has supported over 5,000 students from more than 100 schools across 27 counties, resulting in over 500 student-produced short films. By providing a platform for students to produce their own creative concepts from script to screen, the program teaches vital real-world lessons. Independent evaluations have shown it boosts student confidence, leadership, and collaboration, supporting everything from Career Technical Education (CTE) to Social Emotional Learning.

For those of us helping to guide the vision and mentorship programs at El Raton Media Works, this competition represents a critical investment in our region's next generation of media professionals.

How the Process Works: From Script to Screen

The magic of Film Prize Junior lies in its structured, real-world approach to production. Here is how students go from having a simple idea to screening their final cut at a statewide festival:

  • The Pitch and Proposal: Open to all 5th–12th-grade students in New Mexico, the journey begins in the fall. Students form teams and must submit a detailed project proposal—such as a narrative screenplay, an animation storyboard, or a documentary outline. They choose from five genres: Comedy, Drama, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Thriller, or Documentary.

  • Student-Led Production: Once proposals receive official feedback and approval, the cameras roll. Every single project is strictly student-led and student-created. While an adult "Teacher Producer" (a teacher, nonprofit staff member, or community organizer) helps manage communication and logistics, the writing, directing, filming, and editing must be driven entirely by the students.

  • The Festival Showcase: Final films are submitted by early spring. All approved entries are then showcased both in-person at the Film Prize Junior Festival and online in the Virtual Festival.

  • Awards and Equipment Grants: Films compete for Juried Awards chosen by industry mentors and Audience Choice Awards voted on by the public. Winning projects earn serious rewards, including film equipment grants (up to $1,500) to help schools or organizations fund future projects, cash prizes, and celebration funds to honor the students' hard work.

Championing Rural and Native Storytelling

What makes the New Mexico festival truly special is its commitment to equity and representation. While massive districts participate, the program has been incredibly successful in empowering rural communities like Deming, Peñasco, and our very own Raton. Out of 192 films featured at the recent festival, 55 were from rural areas.

Furthermore, the program is actively supporting Native students to tell their own stories on their own land. The festival recently featured over 50 films with Native representation and introduced the Native Youth Filmmakers Emergence Award, presented by Academy Award winner Wes Studi.

Raton’s Rising Stars Take the State Stage

Through El Raton Media Works, our local students have pushed their creative boundaries to produce professional-grade short films that have won in previous years and are currently competing for the Film Prize Junior New Mexico Virtual Audience Choice Award.

This year, some of our brightest young filmmakers have stepped up to the plate.

Want to Make a Movie? How to Sign Up for the 2027 Festival

If watching these incredible student films has you feeling inspired, it’s never too early to start preparing for the 2026–2027 school year! The next Film Prize Junior New Mexico festival will take place in the spring of 2027, and getting involved is easy:

  • Who is Eligible: Any 5th–12th grade student in New Mexico. You don't have to be a film expert—you just need a story to tell.

  • Find a Teacher Producer: Every student team needs an adult sponsor known as a "Teacher Producer." This can be a traditional classroom teacher, but it can also be a librarian, a community organization leader, or a nonprofit staff member (like our team here at El Raton Media Works).

  • The Timeline: While exact dates for the 2027 festival will be announced soon, the typical timeline requires Teacher Producers to register their school or organization in the early fall (usually September). Project proposals (screenplays or outlines) are typically due in November, giving students the winter to shoot and edit their final films before the late February submission deadline.

  • Get Registered: Educators and community leaders can create a profile and register through the Film Prize Junior Portal when the new season opens. Raton students can sign up on our website at: www.elratonmediaworks.org/film-prize-jr-new-mexico-mentorship-program
