Update: Sign Up for Film & Media Camp Coming in June

As our community continues its engaging exploration of Mary Roach's bestselling book, Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law, El Raton Media Works (ERMW) is gearing up for one of the most anticipated hands-on events of the local NEA Big Read program.

Starting exactly one month from today, on June 8, 2026, ERMW will host the Film & Media Camp: Storytelling Through the Lens. This immersive two-week camp invites local youth and adults to step behind the camera and translate the quirky, real-world dynamics of human-wildlife conflict into compelling visual stories.

Bringing "Fuzz" from Page to Screen In Fuzz, Roach takes readers on a humorous and scientific journey into what happens when nature breaks human laws—from jaywalking moose to breaking-and-entering bears. For northern New Mexico communities where wildlife encounters are a part of daily life, these themes are highly relatable.

The upcoming Film & Media Camp will channel this local reality into art, blending literary inspiration with cinematic creativity. Participants will learn the fundamentals of filmmaking, exploring exactly how stories transition from an initial idea to a finished short film.

During the camp, attendees will:

  • Develop original scripts inspired by wildlife, coexistence, and human-nature conflict.

  • Learn the technical ropes, getting hands-on with camera operation, lighting, and sound techniques.

  • Collaborate with peers as cast and crew.

  • Edit and produce a finished short film, with opportunities to explore narrative, documentary, experimental film, or even 360° VR storytelling formats.

No Experience? No Problem! Whether you are a passionate media creator or stepping onto a set for the very first time, the camp is designed to provide real-world experience in a supportive, collaborative environment. It’s more than just a summer activity—it's a creative launchpad.

The Grand Premiere at the Historic Shuler Theater The creative journey won't end when the cameras stop rolling. Camp participants will have the thrilling opportunity to see their hard work celebrated on the big screen! All completed projects will be showcased during the NEA Big Read Closing Celebration at the historic Shuler Theater on June 27, 2026, followed by a panel discussion highlighting the power of literature and creativity in deepening our understanding of nature.
