The City of Raton and El Raton Media Works (ERMW) hosted a special groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction of a new Film, Media, and Technology Training Center—a regional hub for creative workforce development. The project is part of Raton’s broader effort to diversify the local economy and create high-wage pathways in film and emerging media production, coding, digital storytelling, and technical training.
The celebration included:
Remarks from city, county, and project leaders including Ann Theis, ERMW; Neil Segotta, Mayor of Raton; Rick Mestas, Raton City Manager; Si Trujillo, Colfax County Commissioner; Judge Piancino, Municipal Judge; and Aleen Martinez, Local 480 IATSE Representative.
Live music by First Street Revival Band, which is composed of local musicians Matt Shaddeau, Kimberle Burke, and Mark Sherak.
A special appearance by George Tomsco of the legendary band The Fireballs with a tribute to Kearny,

Local Student Film Showcase featuring shorts created by students in ERMW's Film Prize Junior NM and SFCC Dual Credit Classes programs.

Refreshments and tasty food were provided free from Little C's, thanks to the contribution of the Raton Regional Economic Development Summit.
The event was attended by a wide range of local, regional, and state officials, the architects and contractors, educational and nonprofit partners, and film industry representatives from SAG-AFTRA and IATSE Local 480.
“This project is more than just a building—it’s a launchpad for the next generation of creators, coders, and creative entrepreneurs," said Ann Theis, Director of El Raton Media Works. “We’re proud to build it in the heart of a community that believes in innovation and collaboration.”
